Burns - Chicken & Rice Review
Our star rating: 5
Ingredients:
Brown Rice (Min 63%), Chicken Meal (Min 20%), Oats, Peas, Chicken Oil, Sunflower Oil, Seaweed, Minerals & Vitamins
One of the first things you will notice in comparison to other brands is the lack of Wheat, Animal Fat, Hydrolysed Proteins and Salt.
This is a really top quality food, developed by a veterinary surgeon, which provides all your dog's needs from natural sources and is well balanced in terms of protein (many other foods have far too much vegetable proteins - a cause of skin and hair problems amongst others) and is also low in fat. These are also "single meat protein source" foods - for example the Chicken contains no Fish protein - so they are great for food intolerances.
The Burns range of foods can also be used instead of the highly priced veterinary prescribed foods for conditions including Obesity, Digestive Abnormality, Hyper-sensitivity, Cardiac, Liver, Urinary, Joint, Oral and Renal issues. Our own dogs have been on this food for 13 years and they are great!
Feeding Guide
The Burns guide for our imaginary 20Kg Adult dog is 200g per day. Significantly less than other brands and even as little as33% of the amount for some cheap supermarket rations.
Costings and Comparisons
On 10th September 2011 the price is 67,25€ for 15Kg.
The feeding cost for our 20Kg dog is therefore 0,90€ per day
Star Rating
We happily grant this food 5 stars. The only reservation is that large active dogs (40Kg+) can lose weight on it - but Burns have the Canine Extra or High Energy Lamb which can be used instead.
Closing Note
The reason we started on the Burns foods was that our 2 year old Bearded Collie, Lennie, developed a pancreatic problem along with Addison's Disease. The vet put him on expensive veterinary foods (which did nothing for him) and gave him 2 years to live. We investigated, discovered Burns and tried him on it - most of his symptoms almost disappeared - he still needed a digestive enzyme due to the damaged pancreas - but he then lived for another 12 years.
Since then we have been highly impressed with the effects the Burns foods have had on our client's dogs. Simple issues like losing hair, bald patches, smelly skin, bad breath, oral hygiene have been sorted within days. The most remarkable was a dog with open sores for 4 months, treated by 3 vets over this period with no improvement but solved within 7 days on Burns food!
